THE IUCN RED LIST OF THREATENED SPECIES
The Wilderness & Wildlife Conservation Trust (WWCT) has played a key role in the IUCN Red List assessments for Sri Lanka’s wild cats.
Our long-term research and fieldwork directly contributed to the reclassification of the Sri Lankan leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya) as Vulnerable, providing the scientific basis for its current conservation status.
WWCT team members have been elected members of the IUCN SSC Cat Specialist Group for decades and serve as the Red List assessors for the Sri Lankan leopard, as well as contributing assessors for the island’s other three wild cat species — the fishing cat, jungle cat, and rusty-spotted cat.
Through this ongoing collaboration, we continue to support global efforts to ensure accurate, evidence-based conservation assessments for Sri Lanka’s unique wild felines.
